Danica Patrick believes she can take pole position for the season-opening Daytona 500 race.
Her confidence comes from the strong testing form she sowed ahead of her first full NASCAR Sprint Cup season. Earlier this month Patrick was among the quickest in the group test at Daytona in her Stewart-Haas Chevrolet.
“I’m thinking the top six seems very realistic and if everything goes right and we find a couple more speed items and put a good lap in, it could be pole. I want the pole after seeing how fast our car was at Daytona, but a top-six position will obviously take a lot of weight off our shoulders when it comes to the qualifying races,” Danica Patrick was quoted as saying by Autosport. Patrick who took pole for last year’s Nationwide Series opener at Daytona.
So far no female driver has taken a pole at NASCAR’s top-level, although both Patrick and Shawna Robinson have taken poles in the Nationwide Series. Patrick, although confident in her single-lap pace, said she expects her race results to build up gradually in her first full stock car season. She only entered a handful of Cup races alongside her Nationwide campaign last year.
