DuPont remains Jeff Gordon’s sponsor despite ownership and name change image

Longtime Jeff Gordon sponsor DuPont has announced it will continue to back the NASCAR star as Axalta Coating Systems.

The name change of one of NASCAR’s longest-running sponsors means the No. 24 Chevrolet SS will also have a new livery. Jeff Gordon, NASCAR’s active driver with the most Sprint Cup wins, will be sponsored in 14 Sprint Cup Series races by Axalta Coating Systems, formerly known as DuPont.

The company had backed Jeff Gordon since his debut in NASCAR’s big leagues more than 21 years ago. The change was announced Monday after the Carlyle Group completed its acquisition of DuPont’s performance paint business for $4.9 billion.

Hendrick Motorsports said in a statement later on Monday that the sale would not affect DuPont’s continued support of its NASCAR efforts.

“We may have a new name on the No. 24 Chevrolet SS in 2013, but it’s the same core group that I’ve enjoyed working with for more than 20 years. We’ve had success together on and off the track. We plan to carry that success into our third decade,” said four-time Sprint Cup champion Jeff Gordon, who has long been associated with DuPont’s splashy paint schemes.
