eBay Motors announced sales of $3.7 billion in the third-quarter of this year.
Of the total amount, eBay says that $2 billion was from vehicle sales and the remaining $1.7 billion was from parts and accessories. The company revealed the top brands and models that have featured on its auction website and where these purchases were made.
Not surprisingly, the Detroit Three occupied the top three spots for the top brands, with American muscle cars and pickup trucks reaching the top five. The Ford Mustang was the top-selling car on eBay in 2012, followed by the Chevrolet Corvette and the Chevrolet Camaro. No. 4 was Ford F-250, followed by Ford F-150.
More than three-quarters of all cars sold on eBay in 2012 were interstate transactions with California, Florida and Texas taking the most sales. New York was fourth, with Illinois, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New Jersey, Michigan and Georgia making the top 10 states with most transactions.
As for collector cars, this year’s total sales amounted to $184 million, for 2,186 cars sold. That’s an average of $84,000 per car and an all-time record, behind the $167 million previous record from 2007.
