Europe: ultra-luxury segment to get SUV-driven sales boost image

The continent’s most exclusive niche – the one that involves prices that generally jump well above 100, 000 euros – is scheduled to accelerate its growth thanks to upcoming introductions of sport utility models.

The exclusive car segment will soar past 10,000 units this year and will continue its rapid ascension past 2016 as brands such as Bentley, Maserati, Rolls-Royce, Aston Martin and Lamborghini introduce their first ever SUV/crossover models. The brands are poised to create a new niche within their own niche as global demand for SUVs and crossovers has skyrocketed beyond forecasts – the first expected introductions coming in 2016 from Bentley and Maserati. The first has committed – after years of speculations and teasers – to the segment with the Bentayga and the latter with the Levante. Rolls-Royce has also recently confirmed it would move into the newly created segment and even sports car producer Lotus mulls an SUV model for its ailing lineup. Lamborghini is also mulling the introduction of the Urus sport utility vehicle but is ultimately waiting to receive approval – the VW Group might refrain from adding internal competition to Bentley’s offering.

Together with Rolls-Royce, Aston Martin was the latest to unveil its SUV plans, in the form of a concept displayed during the recent Geneva International Motor Show. Ultraluxury brands have been attracted to the segment by the rising popularity of high-priced flagship offerings from premium automakers – such as the classical Land Rover Range Rover, Mercedes G Class or GL Class.
