European passenger car registrations up 6.2% in January image

The passenger car market in Europe started the year on growth, marking the 29th consecutive month of sales increase, the European Automobile Manufacturers Association said.

In 2015, the demand for passenger cars in EU grew by 9.3 percent compared to 2014, bringing the total number of cars sold to 13.7 million units. Following a double digit boost in December, the first month of 2016 showed that the positive trend kept its momentum. Registrations during January rose by 6.2 percent compared to a year earlier, totaling 1,061,150 units, a result considered encouraging for the near future, as the upward market trend remains stable, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association. Among the major markets, Italy (+17.4 percent) and Spain (+12.1 percent) recorded the strongest performances in January, both posting double-digit percentage gains. Also the French (+3.9 percent), German (+3.3 percent) and UK (+2.9 percent) passenger car markets grew during the first month of 2016, although at more modest rates.

After several troublesome years since the 2008 financial crisis, the European car market seems to be going in the right direction again. However, there is still a long way to reach the pre-crisis levels of 15.5 million cars recorded in 2007. For 2016, ACEA foresees a much moderate pace than last year, expecting car sales to go up by around 2 percent, reaching roughly 14 million units.
