The company’s previous design chief Frank Stephenson has left McLaren for Mini and Sports Series designer Rob Melville has taken control – and he will bring a new era of design for the supercar maker, with 15 new and reworked models until 2022.
And because it’s a gargantuan task – he’s also getting support from outside. Namely, Cincinnati, Ohio-based design student Raleigh Haire has dreamt a concept worthy of becoming a possible P1 hypercar successor. It has no official name, but it’s dubbed as the “ultimate exposure hypercar,” with looks and performance to match. The front end seems inspired by the Aston Martin Valkyrie with low noise and open grille, while the cockpit looks to be exactly that – as if taken directly from a jet fighter.
At the back, the engine is almost completely in the wild, with just some carbon fiber body panels around it. The concept has actually been envisioned with three levels of performance – Level 1, or Alpha, delivers a mere 350 horsepower (260 kilowatts). Level 2, or Delta, comes with 550 hp (410 kW) and While level 3, or Ultra, reaches a more appropriate 900 hp (671 kW) and electronically controlled aerodynamics. Don’t think this is too much – McLaren wants to introduce an LT Sub-brand and is also looking to replace the said P1, all the while cooking up a spiritual successor for the famed F1 as well.
