If you didn’t know that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Sergio Marchionne is a one of a kind chief executive, here’s another example then – he just asked the world not to buy one of his cars.
We’re not kidding, Chief Executive Sergio Marchionne does have an advice for his company car’s potential buyers – avoid purchasing the California only Fiat 500e (electric version), because he’s sick of losing money with it.
“I hope you don’t buy it because every time I sell one it costs me $14,000,” he said to the audience at a conference in Washington, when asked about the 500e. “I’m honest enough to tell you that. I will sell the (minimum) of what I need to sell and not one more,” Marchionne added.
Fiat Chrysler CEO also said he considers Tesla Motors Model S sedan to be the only electric car that brings home some money, which is due to the high entry price point. He also added the only reason they sell the 500e is because of the federal and state mandates that coerce manufacturers into coming up with electric cars.
Marchionne added that by 2025 the company would need to have at least half of its line-up made up of hybrid gasoline-electric cars, which is what he considers best to reach the US federal fuel efficiency requirements for 2025 – and not building electric cars.
