Fiat’s very own version of the new Mazda MX-5 generation, the so-called 124 Spider, is said to be unveiled later on this year.
There is no surprise anymore that Fiat is planning to introduce its rebadged version of the new Mazda MX-5 generation but according to a recent report, the model in question is closer to production than believed. The guys from Edmunds, who are quoting sources from within the industry, are saying that the roadster will be introduced towards the end of the year, probably during the Frankfurt Motor Show or even the Los Angeles Auto Show. The model will become a rival for the Porsche Boxster and for the MINI Cooper Roadster, one it will become available.
The new Fiat 124 Spider will get a new design, which will be Italian all the way, but underneath its appealing body, the new Mazda MX-5 generation will be found. A different engine than the ones used by the Japanese based automaker is expected to be used by Fiat and this is believed to be a 1.4 liter four-cylinder engine. The model is also said to come out as a two-seater or a 2+2 convertible and it will be put together along with the Miata, at the Hiroshima plant, in Japan. The MX-5 is using a 131 HP (96 kW) 1.5 liter engine in the entry-level version, but on more expensive units, the larger 2.0 liter four-cylinder can be found, with its 160 HP (117 kW).
