Ford celebrated today, June 20th, its 7 millionth Transit, the famous commercial van introduced in 1965 in Europe.
The Transit commercial van is currently sold in 118 markets in 6 continents and lined up end to end the 7.000.000 units would stretch from London to Sydney, Australia and back. The 7 millionth milestone was celebrated in Nanchang, China, where the automaker has officially opened a new assembly plant for the Transit.
Ford CEO Alan Mulally said that the automaker’s strategic partner Jiangling Motors has invested $300 millions in the Jiangling Xiaolan plant, which manufactures Ford-branded vehicles and JMC-branded vehicles for the Chinese market which is in a continuous increase.
“The Ford Transit plays a significant role in the lives and jobs of millions of people,” Mulally said. “From getting workers to a building site, to delivering important packages, or even rushing a patient to the hospital, people all over the world rely on Ford Transits to get the job done.”
Launched in 1965 the Transit has an immediate success and since then Ford has created various variants and bodystyles for the model including parcel vans, tipper trucks, campers and the out of the ordinary one-offs, such as the Cosworth V8-powered Supervans.
