Ford F-Series remains America’s top-selling vehicle in July image

Ford remains on top with the F-Series full-size pickup trucks.
For more than two decades, Ford F-Series trucks were the bestselling vehicle in the United States, and the F-150 still retains a title it’s held for over thirty years America’s favorite pickup truck.

The F-Series pickup, sold 49,314 units, achieving a 12 th consecutive month of increased sales – up 0.4 percent from July 2011. Of these, the F-150 equipped with EcoBoost made up 42 percent.

EcoBoost is Ford’s name for a line of innovative turbocharged engines. The V6 variant offered in the F-series offers V8-like power with improved fuel economy. It remains very popular with cost-conscious buyers.

And to keep this trend, the upcoming remake of the F-Series will reportedly make a major shift away from steel to aluminum in a bid to shave as much as 700 pounds off the big truck’s hefty girth.
Ford already uses an aluminum hood on the F-150, but according to the Wall Street Journal, we could see a more extensive use of the lighter-weight metal in the truck’s body panels.

Such a drastic diet would allow the F-150, which currently gets up to 19 mpg combined and 23 mpg on the highway, to operate with smaller, more fuel-efficient engines.
But taking 700 pounds out of a 5,500-pound pickup primarily through use of aluminum roof, hood, body, doors and tailgate can add about $1,500 to a truck’s cost.

Overall, Ford Motor Company sales were down 4 percent in July due to lower fleet sales. Fleet
sales were down 16 percent. Retail sales were up 2 percent.
