Exclusively built in Romania for the European market – the US version for example is imported from India – Ford today kicked off production of the refreshed, 2018 EcoSport at its Craiova assembly facility.
Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, Prime Minister Mihai Tudose and other senior officials were on point next to almost 4,000 Ford workers as the initial batch of EcoSport units rolled off the production line. Ford is preparing to meet growing demand with its latest crossover offering – after a 27 percent increase across the Old Continent during the first eight months of the year. Before the start of 2018 Ford will also have a complete workforce at the factory – adding another 1,700 jobs at Ford Craiova, with total investments of more than one billion dollars in the Romanian facility since it was acquired back in 2008.
The Craiova facility will exclusively supply Europe with the EcoSport, and reach a total of 56 different markets, from the United Kingdom, New Caledonia in Oceania, Turkmenistan in Central Asia, to South Africa. At the facility there’s also an ongoing engine production – taking care of assembly of Ford’s 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine – the International Engine of the Year award winner powerplant. Ford’s new EcoSport includes for Europe such novelties as the new ST-Line with sporty credentials but also marks the introduction of the all-new 1.5-litre EcoBlue diesel engine with up to 125 hp.
