The new Ford Transit Custom makes its global debut at the Birmingham CV Show. The commercial vehicle marks a major step in Ford’s commitment to refresh its entire commercial vehicle line-up by 2014.
With a full range of van, kombi, and double-cab-in-van models, the new Transit Custom will go on sale later in 2012 in Europe as well as other global markets, except North America.
It will be offered in two overall lengths, 195.7 inches and 210.2 inches. It will offer a maximum load volume of 211.8 cubic feet, and easily accommodate the proverbial 4×8-foot sheet of plywood between its rear wheel wells.
About 40 percent of the body of the new Ford Transit Custom is made from high-strength steels, which help make the vehicle both lighter and stronger. The new vehicle also features an enhanced restraint system which now gives customers the option of specifying curtain airbags for the front seat occupants, in addition to driver and passenger airbags and seat-mounted side thorax airbags.
Technologies such as SYNC and rear-view cameras will be offered, as well as lane alert and other stuff someone driving a ginormous van might possibly want.
Available in 100PS, 125PS and 155PS power rating, the new Ford Transit Custom will feature Auto-Start-Stop as standard.
Ford will be presenting larger and higher payload Transits later in 2012. These models will be extensively sold on a global basis, including North America, and will also feature rear-wheel-drive.
Production of the new Transit Custom will start from mid-2012 at Ford’s plant in Kocaeli, Turkey, with market availability later in the year.
