Formula 1 – Canadian Grand prix qualifications – Vettel in pole position image

Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel succeeded to secure his sixth pole position in seven races this season.

Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso topped the second practice session at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve on Friday.

“It was definitely one our best Fridays,” Alonso told reporters. “It doesn’t happen often that we see our cars in the top five places.

“It’s hard to drive in these conditions and then there are three or four places here where the slightest error sees you end up in the wall.

“In the race, I expect the safety car will play a part

Even a crash in practice on Friday morning failed to damage Vettel’s car or his confidence sufficiently for the rest to catch up.

“Thank you, thank you, thanks for fixing the car on Friday after I stuffed it into the wall,” he screamed when it was all over. “We made up some ground from last year. Now I feel comfortable here.” There is even something a little too familiar about his pole-winning celebrations.

Later, he added: “We know this is not our strongest track, we love high-speed corners. But we had the fastest package today so we can be confident.
