Monza, Italy: Stoffel Vandoorne won the Formula Renault 3.5 today at Monza, even if he suffered a huge lock-up into Turn 1 on lap 12.
Vandoorne took his advantage in the first laps as he was able to broke clear of the chaos behind him, , where several cars cut the chicane on lap one and fifth place starter Daniil Move was spun out.
Kevin Magnussen benefitted from Da Costa’s misfortune and was next to inherit second place but could do little about leader Vandoorne who was now well clear of the pack.
Third was Christopher Zanella, the man that just switched from Formula 2.
“It wasn’t an easy race, as I had a flat tyre on lap seven after one of my wheels locked. My head is still spinning! I built a big lead at the start, and from there I simply had to manage it.”
“I made a good start and quickly rose through the field, thanks to the incident at turn one. Towards the end of the race I had a flat in one of my tyres. There was no room for error, as Christopher Zanella was piling pressure on me. So I’m very pleased with this result.”
Race 2 at Monza begins tomorrow at 13:00 (CET)
