Here is a first look at the Maserati SUV concept that was unveiled today at the 64th Frankfurt motor show. Its name is Kubang and will compete with Porsche’s Cayenne, and the upcoming SUV from Aston Martin.
It’s the first SUV from the Italian automaker that most probably will enter in production at the end of the 2012.
The essence and all major system components of the Maserati sport luxury SUV will unmistakably be Maserati: style, engine, suspensions, brakes, handling and performance will all be 100% Maserati, but the main platform will come from the actual generation Jeep Grand Cherokee.
An AT 8 speed automatic transmission and specific performance settings such as suspensions, brakes, steering will be exclusively developed in Modena for the Maserati sport luxury SUV by the Maserati Product Development Department.
On the engine front, we should see a specially prepared version of the 3.0-litre Pentastar V6 which is reportedly good for 350bhp.
One rung up, there will almost certainly be a 3.9-litre V8 designed and built by Ferrari. Equipped with switchable intake and exhaust manifolds and a two-stage exhaust, the direct-injection twin-turbo unit is tipped to deliver 450bhp.
The idea of a sport luxury SUV is naturally not totally new to Maserati. Many will remember the Kubang concept that was unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show in 2003.
