BMW is continuously expanding its M Performance line, and this time around we are treated to the facelifted 5 Series in its M550d Touring iteration.
We all know that the 5 Series is one of the best selling model in the executive segment and this is also due to the popularity of its Touring model. And when you talk about Touring models, you really need to talk about the diesel war – at least in Europe such models will hardly be seen with a petrol under their hood.
Trying to wipe the floor with the competition, the M GMBH department has fitted the 5 Touring with the monster diesel it employed on the X5 SUV – the tri-turbo straight-six with the same power output of 280 kW/381 hp and peak torque of 740 Newton meters (546 lb-ft).
This means the estate model will reach 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds (4.7 for the sedan version), and will top out due to the know limitation at the 250 km/h mark. Of course, fuel economy has its importance here, as the engine reaches the EU6 exhaust standard with a EU test cycle of 6.4 l/100 km (44.1 mpg imp) – 169 g/km of CO2.
