Gazprom to back Yo-Mobile car project image

OAO Gazprom, Russia’s state-run gas export monopoly, announced it will back the fuel-efficient car project called the Yo-Mobile.

The project of billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov will receive sponsorship from Russia’s largest company, the Interfax agency reported, citing Gazprom CEO Alexey Miller.

„We’re going to help promote the project on the market. It’s really original. It’s a new word. For Gazprom, it’s an interesting way to develop gas-engine fuel,” Miller was quoted as saying by Bloomberg. The declaration was made at the presentation of the car held yesterday at a Gazprom office in Moscow. According to Interfax, Gazprom plans to become the vehicle’s main sponsor. Asked how big will the sponsorship be, Miller said the contract, when signed, „would correspond to the scale of the idea.”

According to Andrei Biryukov, director of carmaker Yo-Auto, the company plans to enter the vehicle in races including the Dakar Rally in order to promote it around the world. Yo-Auto is a joint-venture between truck manufacturer Yarovit Motors and Onexim Group, a company owned by Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov. He also owns the New Jersey Nets NBA team and has recently announced his intention to run for presidency in 2012 against current prime minister Vladimir Putin.
