Now what has to do this watch with motorsport? Well – Luigi “Gino” Macaluso (9 June 1948-27 October 2010) was the President and Chairman of the Sowind group, under whose roof a watch Manufacture and the two Brands Girard-Perregaux and JeanRichard are united. Motor racing has played and continues to play a pivotal role in his life.

In 1972, he won the title of European Rally Champion at the wheel of a 124 Fiat Abarth. In 1985, he joined the Club Italia, a not-for-profit organization promoting the Italian historic car patrimony and over which he presides. In 2001, he was elected President of the CSAI, the Italian Motor Sport Federation. He is currently President of the FIA’s Karting Commission and sits on the FIA World Council.

The R&D 01 is the product of several years of – you guessed it – research and development, consulting with Formula 1 racing drivers to create a timepiece designed around the requirements of the driver. In other words, the ultimate driver’s watch.

The name alone of the “R&D 01” watch symbolises all the importance attached by Girard-Perregaux to the Research & Development sector, as well as its attention to detail.

The design of the model is unique for a chronograph. The push-pieces are actually on the left-hand side of the case rather than on the right. This choice was carefully investigated in conjunction with sportsmen in a variety of disciplines, such as motor racing. Hence the chronograph provides optimum ease of use in any competition.
