The U.S. Navy Memorial will honor General Motors CEO Dan Akerson, a Navy veteran, in a formal ceremony Sept. 18 in Washington, District of Colombia.
Akerson will be recognized at the 2013 Lone Sailor Awards Dinner for displaying strong leadership at GM and other companies. Other honorees include billionaire Ted Turner and former U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison.
“I am very humbled and deeply grateful to receive this prestigious award and to be included among this special group of honorees,” said Akerson, who serves on the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation board. “The Lone Sailor Award exemplifies how I have tried to live my life by three simple, yet powerful principles — honor, courage and commitment.”
“Dan Akerson’s leadership skills have been the driving force behind his successful military and private-sector careers,” the Navy Memorial said in a statement, praising the CEO’s philanthropic activity as well.
Akerson, who earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy, served as an officer on a destroyer in 1970-75.
