GM Confirms RWD Commodore Export in the U.S. image

It’s official! GM will bring the next Holden Commodore sedan to the U.S. as a Chevrolet.

GM confirmed the rumors that the next Commodore will come to North America by the end of 2013 as the new Chevrolet SS rear-drive performance sedan. The company added that the SS will also be GM’s next NASCAR Sprint Cup racecar starting with the 2013 Daytona 500.

“As a passionate race fan and performance enthusiast, I am thrilled that Chevrolet will deliver a true rear-wheel-drive NASCAR racecar in the SS that is closely linked to the performance sedan that will be available for sale,” said Mark Reuss, president of GM North America.

The 2014 SS will be manufactured on the VF Commodore platform, which is to be launched in Australia as a Holden in 2013. The VF will feature a V8 engine and will offers significant technology advances such as fuel efficiency and light weight. The 2014 SS model will be sold in limited edition and will be the first time the company sells a rear-wheel-drive sedan in the U.S. The SS is to be built at GM Holden’s plant in Adelaide, alongside the VF Commodore.
