GM planning Toyota GT 86 rival image

The North American based automotive giant General Motors is planning to develop a direct rival for the Toyota GT 86.

GM wants a new compact rear-wheel drive sports car and it wants it soon. The announcement has been made by Mark Reuss, the General Motors North America president, who said that a rival for the Toyota GT 86 / Scion FR-S and for the Subaru BRZ is what the Detroit-based carmaker needs.

“A really nice, light, rear-drive car that’s inexpensive – we know that rings a bell. That’d be a huge win for us if we had that”, as Mark Reuss told Automotive News.

The brand has been apparently encouraged to develop a rival for the Toyota GT 86 by young people who have “seen” the model in production, based on the Chevrolet Code 130R Concept. The model in question is a boxy 4.4-meter four-seat coupe concept, with the design cues borrowed from the Camaro. The model is based on the same rear-wheel drive platform as the Cadillac ATS and it has a 109-inch long wheelbase. The Chevy Code 130R Concept is powered by a 1.4 liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine, which is good for 150 HP and 148 lb-ft of torque.
