GM sales up 10 percent in August, all four brands report growth image

General Motors announced sales of 240,520 vehicles in August in the United States, up 10 percent compared with August 2011.

GM reported 11 percent higher sales to retail customers, with August being its best retail month of the year.

Fleet sales increased 6 percent, with all four GM brands posting higher total and retail sales. Chevrolet passenger sales increased 25 percent and no less than four models enjoyed their best-ever monthly sales – the Spark, Sonic, Cruze and Volt. Another performer was the Chevy Equinox, which set an August record with its 22 percent year-over-year sales increase.

Cadillac also reported 11 percent higher sales, thanks to strong demand for the SRX crossover, the Escalade SUV and the new XTS large sedan. Buick sales went up 12 percent, with the Verano posting its ninth consecutive monthly sales increase. At the same time, Buick posted its best retail sales since September 2007.

Finally, sales of the GMC brand increased 4 percent, following a 35 percent drop in fleet sales. The best results were achieved by the GMC Acadia (up 26 percent) and the GMC Terrain (up 16 percent).

GM expects its 2012 sales to rise as the four-cylinder 2013 Chevrolet Malibu and the 2013 Cadillac ATC are currently reaching the market.
