First was an award wining search engine. After we got Google maps, earth, android os, adsense, adwords, and now, a car? Yes!
Internet giant Google is secretly developing a car that can drive itself, using artificial intelligence, a report says. The self-driving cars have traveled more than 140,000 miles (225,308 kilometers) in the experiments, according to a posting on Google’s blog today.
The vehicles navigate by maps and use cameras, radar sensors and a laser range finder to monitor traffic. Although a driver was present to take control should the need arise.
“Our goal is to help prevent traffic accidents, free up people’s time and reduce carbon emissions by fundamentally changing car use,” Google said on its blog.
Google predicts that its self-driving cars — which are still very much in the experimental phase — could reduce traffic accidents and save about 600,000 lives a year worldwide. It also predicts these cars would lower carbon emissions.
