The third largest Japanese automaker is mulling a significant reduction in expenses for the next European Civic compact model, generic saying it would use the basis of the global platform.
The upcoming new generation of the well-known compact model has been surprisingly previewed by the unexpected two-door coupe concept introduced during this month’s New York auto show. As far as Europe is concerned, the next-generation Civic five-door model will reach showrooms in 2017. The plan is to continue its production at the factory in Swindon, England, which also manufactures the models for the current generation. But, for the first time, the hatchback will also be sent overseas to the US and several other markets. Honda’s chief of purchasing in Swindon, Jim Harris, says the move would allow Honda to lower supplier prices by dropping European-specific parts in favor of a global car architecture. “There will be a significant difference in cost to build the new Civic,” commented the executive.
Today, 90 percent of the plant’s production is reaching European markets, but for the next generation the mix will be different – out of the planned annual production of 120,000 vehicles, only around 50 percent will be sold in Europe. The automaker recently announced it would invest 200 million British pounds to refit the plant and make it able to produce export Civic hatchbacks that would then reach the US, Japan and Australia, among others. The move comes as the factory is losing Jazz and CR-V production. The first is going to be imported from Japan and the crossover will come from Canada.
