Chinese state media reports that sixteen people are trapped after a highway tunnel under construction collapsed Sunday night in East China’s Jiangxi Province.
The Xinhua News Agency said Monday that the highway tunnel collapsed at around 10 pm in Longnan County in the city of Ganzhou.
The tunnel is part of a 3.5 km-long (3,429 kilometers-long) expressway running from northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province all the way to southern Guangdong Province.
This comes a month after one of the longest bridges in northern China collapsed — setting off a storm of criticism and underscoring questions about the quality of construction in the country’s rapid expansion of its infrastructure.
According to local reports, since 2007 15 bridges have collapsed in China. Only three of them were more than 15 years old at the time of their collapse.
