Impact: Mexico bus crash kills at least 43 image

43 people are dead after a truck trailer crashed into a passenger bus in eastern Mexico today. The victims were farmworkers traveling from Coatzacoalcos in Veracruz to the border state of Coahuila, state government spokeswoman Gina Dominguez said.

The accident occurred on a winding stretch of highway near the town of Alamo in the northern part of the state at around 4:30 am (0930 GMT).

President Felipe Calderon expressed his sadness over the crash in a message posted on his Twitter account.

“My deepest condolences for the families of those who died in the terrible accident this morning in Veracruz, ” he said.

Rescuers and state and federal police were at the scene, and the governor promised all necessary support to family members.

The AFP reports that road accidents are big cause of death in Mexico. 24,000 people die a year, which amounts to almost double the people who die from drug violence.
