At least 18 people were killed and 17 injured after a bus fell about 45 meters (150 feet) into a deep gorge.
The accident happened early Saturday around 12:45am near Keifang, a village 100 kilometers (60 miles) east of Aizawl, the state capital. According to Arunachal Pradesh state Transport Minister Zoram Sangliana, monsoon rains triggered the landslide in the region.
“Seventeen people died on the spot and one injured person succumbed to injuries while being taken to a nearby hospital. All the injured people have been shifted to the Aizawl civil hospital for treatment. The condition of seven of them is critical,” a Mizoram information department official told reporters.
Chief minister Lal Thanhawla and other ministers visited the injured at the hospital.
India has the world’s deadliest roads, with more than 110,000 people killed every year. Most crashes are blamed on reckless driving, poorly maintained roads and aging vehicles.
