INDYCAR: Brembo will supply carbon brakes for new cars image

The most successful supplier of motorsports braking systems has allied with the IZOD IndyCar Series for the next 2012 season and through to 2015 as Brembo has been named exclusive supplier of brake systems for the series.

The Italian company will initially supply materials to chassis builder Dallara, another Italian company. On the same time, the American division of Brembo will be the vendor to teams for parts and technical support.

Brembo said its design of the new brake system was based on IndyCar’s requirements for a reliable, strong yet lightweight package that yields high performance at a competitive cost. A six-piston caliper assembly weighing only 4.5 pounds (2 kilograms) will be used at all four corners of the new Dallara chassis.

The new innovative Brembo braking system incorporates lightweight carbon-carbon discs, similar to those used in F1 and at the 24 Hours of Lemans. The Indy cars will also run carbon brake pads; the use of these long-lasting components may alloy teams to run the entire season optimizing the quantity of components needed.

The agreement runs until 2015.
