It was an apocalyptic scene on Interstate 75, where nearly crashed into each other near the border between Sarasota and Manatee counties, blocking southbound traffic for several hours.
The Florida Highway Patrol says 52 people were transported to area hospitals, but no fatalities were reported. Luckily no one was killed.
The Sarasota County Fire Department had 18 units at the scene.
“It looks worse than it is,” Capt. Susan Pierson of the Sarasota Fire Department told reporters at the scene.
“I’ve been on the department for 23 years and I’ve never been on a scene where there has been this many, you know, cars involved in an accident,” it said.
Witnesses say the crash occurred amid a sudden downpour on an otherwise clear day. The rain stopped just minutes afterward.
Southbound I-75 at University Parkway was shut down soon after the accident, which was reported at 3:11 p.m.
