The 25-year-old Italian motorcycle racer Andrea Antonelli died in Moscow at the World Supersport race, today, July 21st.
The World Supersport Championship race took place in the Volokolamsk district of Moscow under a torrential rain and slippery conditions. Andrea Antonelli was approaching the final corner, when he collided with two other racers, including fellow rider and compatriot Lorenzo Zannetti.
“Three racers were injured in a collision, and one of them, an Italian, died of the injuries suffered,” a regional police spokesperson told reporters.
Officials cancelled the race and other events for the day. The 25-year-old rider came off his bike and was hit by a fellow rider. Although he was treated by an emergency medical team he died due to the massive head trauma at the circuit’s medical centre.
The rain started in the final stages of the first World Superbike race, which was won by GoldBet BMW’s Marco Melandri. Even if the conditions were terrible officials decided to go on with the World Supersport race, which was red flagged after the awful accident.
