Japan earthquake: Mazda extends production shutdown until March 20 image

Yesterday, Mazda announced that will suspend production at its Hiroshima and Hofu plants from the night shift on March 14 through to the night shift on March 16, 2011.

Today the automaker returns with a new announcement – Mazda is to extend production suspension at its Hiroshima and Hofu plants until March 20.

“Mazda places the highest priority on ensuring the safety and wellbeing of its suppliers, their employees and their families, in the affected region,” the carmaker was quoted as saying.

However, Mazda comes to reassure that none of its employees has been directly affected by the catastrophe. Moreover, Mazda administrative buildings in Tokyo and the Mazda Development Centre in Yokohama escaped damage.
Also, as an interim response, Mazda will donate 30 million yen to support recovery and relief efforts in the region. The company will continue to monitor the situation and will provide goods or personnel as required.
