According to an auto industry group, Toyota Motor Corp.’s Prius hybrid was the best-selling car in May, extending its winning streak to 12 months, the Nikkei business daily said – without citing the exact source.
Toyota’s Prius hybrid sales rose over 200 percent on the year to 20,789 vehicles. On the same time, the Aqua hybrid model was on the second place for the second straight month. The Japanese carmaker sold 20,091 Aqua hybrid vehicles, which went on sale in December.
Number three was the Honda N Box minivehicle – 19,354 units sold; Daihatsu Motor Co.’s (7262) Mira minivehicle came in fourth place, followed by Honda’s Fit subcompact.
Last month, in Japan – Consumer spending, which accounts for about 60 percent of the nation’s GDP, climbed 1.1 percent in the three months. Household expenditure on durable goods including cars surged under a government subsidy program for purchase of environmentally friendly vehicles.
On an annualised basis, Japan’s economy grew 4.1 percent in the January to March period, the data showed, also beating expectations for the economy to grow 3.5 percent.
