The World Rallycross Championship has in the past featured well known hardcore rally driver Ken Block in his Ford Fiesta, but for this year’s championship there’s an upgrade coming.
At the end of Gymkhana Eight, Block teased his return to the World RX 2016 in a newly developed special version of the Focus RS hot hatch. And we’re talking here about a mighty 600-hp and 664 pound-feet of torque Focus RS, thanks to the use of a specially tuned 2.0-liter EcoBoost together with a six-speed sequential gearbox. Ford Focus RS will thus make its debut as a factory entry into the 2016 FIA World Rallycross Championship with Ken Block’s Hoonigan Racing Division at the helm – the Gymkhana specialist will be joined by Andreas Bakkerud as his teammate for the season. “RS is a worldwide brand with a rich heritage that motorsports enthusiasts know and love,” commented Dave Pericak, global director, Ford Performance. “Our RS badge has a natural connection to racing, and we have a passionate, dedicated team on the project. We’re excited to honor the history of Rallye Sport by pushing every aspect of performance and design to the limit.”
The bespoke RS has been built through a global collaboration project between Ford Performance, Block’s Hoonigan Racing and U.K.-based M-Sport. The RS remains an all-wheel drive machine and the new Ecoboost with more than 600 horsepower will enable a zero to 60 mph launch time below the two second threshold. The first appearance of the Focus RS Rallycross cars in the FIA World Rallycross will be occurring in Portugal, during April 15-17, with the worldwide 12-race series passing through 11 countries on three continents.
