Following its recent European unveiling during the 2014 Paris Motor Show, Italy’s Fiat has decided to also debut the model for the US public, during this year’s edition of the Los Angeles Auto Show.
Back in March Fiat Chrysler Automobiles showcased the very small Jeep Renegade SUV, the latest (and smallest) iteration from the specialist brand, Now, the Italian company is adding its twin sibling – the 500X – which goes more after the stylish crossover concept than its American brother.
The Renegade and 500X are slated to be built on the same assembly lines in Fiat’s Melfi, Italy plant and sales of the model are scheduled for the first half of 2015. Sharing the same platform, the duo differ radically when it comes to interior and exterior styling and fortunately the new 500X – designed by Fiat’s designers at Centro Stile in Turin – is better looking than another 500 derivative – the five-door hatchback 500L. The interior screams Italian fashion and has chic options – such as contrasting upholstery and a three-binnacle setup for the instrument cluster.
In the US, powertrain options include a 1.4-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder with 160 HP or Chrysler’s 2.4-liter, 180-horsepower Tigershark four-cylinder. Front wheel-drive is standard but it can also be equipped with an all-wheel drive system that features a disconnecting rear axle for increased mileage.
