BMW has introduced the new i8 to the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show, where the model has made its North American debut.
Originally presented during the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, the BMW i8 is being placed into the spotlights once again, this time with the carmaker bringing it to the L.A. event, where it made its local debut. The vehicle pictured below is finished in Crystal White and it will become available to its future over-seas customers starting from the second quarter of 2014 from 135,700 USD.
The BMW i8 is taking its power from a three-cylinder 1.5 liter gasoline TwinPower Turbo engine, backed up by an electric motor. The internal combustion engine is producing 231 HP (170 kW) and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) of torque, sent to the RWD through a 6-speed automatic transmission, and the electric motor is providing an extra 131 HP (96 kW), which are transferred to the FWD, through a 2-stage automatic transmission.
The total output stands at 362 HP (266 kW) and the peak torque is 570 Nm (420 lb-ft), enough to allow the i8 to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.4 seconds. The average fuel consumption in the hybrid car stands at just 2.5L / 100 km (94 mpg US / 113 mpg UK). The electric range provided is 34 km (22 miles) and once the petrol burner kicks in, this goes up to more than 500 km (310 miles).
