The 2012 Volkswagen Passat has been awarded the 2012 Car of the Year by Motor Trend in terms of advancement in design, engineering excellence, efficiency, safety, value and performance of intended function.

The new Passat generation has been named the 2012 Car of the Year by Motor Trend during the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show and the award was presented to Jonathan Browning, the President and CEO, Volkswagen of America. The German based model has topped 34 other new or completely redesigned models, more in competition than previous years.

“Volkswagen is extremely proud to receive this honor. The recognition from Motor Trend is a testament to the engineering integrity of the Passat and validates our strategy of providing US-built, German engineered mid-size sedan at a price in the heart of the mid-size segment”, said the Volkswagen of America President and CEO, Jonathan Browning.

As a reminder, the 2012 Volkswagen Passat is offered in three trim levels, the S, the SE and the SEL, where the entry-level version is powered by a 2.5 liter five-cylinder engine, developing a total output of 170 horsepower and a peak torque of 177 lb-ft, mated to the standard five-speed manual transmission, with an optional six-speed automatic available. The top-of-the-line version is powered by a 3.6 liter VR6 unit, developing 280 HP and 258 lb-ft of torque, mated to a six-speed DSG transmission. Prices for the 2012 VW Passat start at 19.995 USD.
