Jaguar has unveiled its early preview to an upcoming electric SUV that takes a direct jab at the Tesla Model X and is said to arrive quickly in 2018 with a range of 220 miles (355 km) per charge.
Tesla has currently graduated from being a lonely startup fighting to get recognition for itself and the electric movement as a whole to object of desire for fans and of envy for rivaling automakers. The latter have been scrambling to have an answer and every luxury automaker is going to have soon some sort of response – including Jaguar with its fast-arriving SUV that aims to break the crossover dominance of the Tesla Model X (which gets it easy since it’s alone there). The new I-Pace Concept is just a preview of things to come and has set its eyes on the ultra-enticing crossover segment instead of trying to fight the Model S sedan.
The I-Pace seems to be on par with a Model X P90 – using a similarly-sized 90-kilowatt-hour battery pack. The floor-mounted lithium-ion battery pack is liquid-cooled, and in the concept has enough juice for a 220-mile maximum range, though this falls beneath the 250-mile prowess of the particular Model X. The batteries send power to a couple of electric motors, one for each axle, with a combined power of 400 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque – with the 60 mph sprint expected to be resolved in four seconds.
