The German automaker has delivered an all new sedan for the Indian market, which has been named “Ameo” – and the model of course got leaked in all its glory ahead of the official reveal.
VW’s Indian model range will encompass the new Ameo right between the Polo and Vento sedans and will of course be a local product thanks to assembly taking place at a plant in Chakan. Design wise, Volkswagen does no wonders here, as the Ameo looks like a shrunk Vento with some modifications here and there to make up for the new proportions of the model. The model will come equipped with the turbodiesel 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine from the Polo where it comes packing 90 horsepower and 170 pound-feet (230 Newton meters) of torque or 105 hp and 187 lb-ft (250 Nm) if the driver orders the Polo GT TDI. In both instances, the engine has been mated to a five-speed manual gearbox that redirects the power to the front axle.
VW India could also be looking to offer the Ameo with the naturally-aspirated 1.2-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine delivering 75 hp and 81 lb-ft (110 Nm) or a feistier turbocharged 1.2-liter four-cylinder gasoline that will work with the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The cabin should also look like a mesh of the Polo and Vento as not much research and development work appears to have been done for this particular model – buyers will be able to select from the usual Trendline, Comfortline, and Highline trims. The VW Ameo could receive its official introduction on February 3 at the 2016 Auto Expo and when it launches it will compete against the likes of Honda Amaze, Tata Zest, Hyundai Xcent, Ford Figo Aspire, and the Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire.
