Lewis Hamilton singed contract with Mercedes for next season, leaving McLaren.
This means a huge blow for McLaren, for which Hamilton’s talent and speed has been crucial over the past 13 years. Hamilton, who will be partnered by German Nico Rosberg, has been offered a larger salary than the one from McLaren, and also more possibilities to earn money from personal sponsorships and endorsements.
Although McLaren has the fastest car this year, Mercedes prepares a huge push in 2014, when new engine and chassis rules will be introduced. The one who influenced Hamilton in taking this important decision was Mercedes team principal Ross Brawn. His place will be taken by Sauber’s Sergio Perez.
“Sergio’s new deal means that he will begin a driving partnership with 2009 world champion Jenson Button. The Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team’s new driver line-up offers the perfect blend of youth and experience – a combination from which both sides of the garage will be set to benefit,” said McLaren.
Perez said he was thrilled to join McLaren and that he has tried in the 2012 season to demonstrate his potential, but at the same time keeping humble and focused. Sergio’s career along Vodafone McLaren Mercedes will start in Melbourne in 2013.
