Live Photos: Vw Up! in Rome, Italy image

Small cars are growing in popularity by the day – and VW is ready to cash in. OK, so it had the Lupo a decade or so back, but the Fox that replaced it was very much an afterthought. The Up isn’t.

The city car was first shown as a series of concept cars, starting in 2007 with the Volkswagen up! Concept, but now VW has officially unveiled the production model.

The basic model will cost €9,850 in Europe and will have the 59-horsepower gas engine that slots below the available gas-powered 74-hp engine and 67-horsepower natural-gas engine.

Although the Up! is small—at 139.4 inches long and 64.6 inches wide, it is six inches shorter and nearly two narrower than a Mini Cooper hardtop—VW calls it a “giant among small cars.”
There’s even a decent sized 251-litre boot, expanding to 951-litres with the 60/40 rear seats folded flat.
