Automakers are currently running out of ideas – which is why the special edition of their models get dubbed “Special Edition” – but at least in this case we’re keenly interested on what the car has to offer.
A few months back the British specialist automaker announced the Elise Cup 250 and now the Hethel-based brand is already introducing a limited version of the model that is designed to reach the core strength of the carmaker – cutting weight. With the standard Elise Cup 250 tipping the scales at just 931 kilograms (2,053 pounds) and even going down even further by 10 kg thanks to carbon fiber optional package, you could wonder how is the weight going down even further. Well, the Special Edition weighs just 899 kg (1,981 lbs). Lotus’ ‘light is right’ credo is certainly playing its part here, as the limited-run model uses even more carbon fiber and aluminum – the Elise Cup 250 Special Edition now has a carbon fiber front splitter, front access panel, rear wing, and tailgate. The body hues are Classic Blue, Yellow, Red or White metallic.
This new limited version is actually an anniversary of the company’s 50 years in Norfolk and has the regular Toyota-derived supercharged 1.8-liter engine with 243 horsepower (181 kilowatts) and 184 pound-feet (250 Newton-meters) of torque. The power is channeled to the road via a six-speed manual gearbox with sporty ratios. With an electronic differential lock, this ultra-lightweight sports car will sprint to 60 mph (96 km/h) in just 3.9 seconds and run to 154 mph (248 km/h). To keep things light, things such as air conditioning, cruise control, floor mats, and a carbon fiber hard top become optional amenities.
