On Tuesday, May 15th, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco and 2012 Hyundai Azera as the first two Top Safety Picks.
The 2012 Hyundai Azera, which hit the market earlier this year, is highly rated for its attractive design, luxurious full-featured interior and some really impressive safety features. The car offers, among the nine standard airbags, rear side-impact bags and a driver’s knee airbag, and a camera system in each trim. The model hit top good scores at the new IIHS tests at all subcategories of side-impact and frontal testing. The new Malibu Eco also gained an amazing score, with only one exception: an ‘acceptable ’ score for driver torso injury.
“Winning that status (Top Safety Picks)has become almost the price of entry, particularly for family cars these days,” writes USA Today. “To get it, the vehicle must get the top score of good in the IIHS crash tests which are tougher than the federal tests and include front, side, rear and rollover crash tests, including a roof-strength test in the rollover in which the roof must be able to withstand four times the vehicle’s weight.”
