The Rainband have recorded a tribute song to late MotoGP champion Marco Simoncelli. The song is now available to download on iTunes.
According to crash.net, the Rainband was contacted by The Marco Simoncelli Foundation after writing the track and will donate all profits to the foundation.
On 23 October 2011, Simoncelli was involved in a collision with Colin Edwards and Valentino Rossi during the Malaysian Grand Prix at the Sepang International Circuit.
Simoncelli’s bike lost traction in Turn 11 and it started to slide towards the gravel, but the tyres regained traction and his bike suddenly veered across the track into the path of Edwards and Rossi, with Simoncelli hanging down on the right side.
After the crash, Simoncelli was taken to the medical center at the Sepang circuit where he died of chest, head and neck injuries, organizers said.
“He was already unconscious when the medical team arrived,” MotoGP medical director Michele Macchiagodena said. “We attempted to resuscitate him but failed. He died 45 minutes later.”
The race, the second to last of the season, was canceled.
Simoncelli, known for his shaggy afro haircut and fun-loving personality, began in the 125cc class in 2002 before moving up to the 250cc class in 2006. He won the 250cc world title in 2008.
