Martin Winterkorn: “Manager of the Year 2011” image

A jury from the German newspaper Handelsblatt has named Volkswagen boss Martin Winterkorn as “Manager of the Year 2011″.

Back in 2008, Chairman of the Management Board Volkswagen AG Martin Winterkorn received one of the most famous awards granted by the media in Italy: “World’s Top Manager Automotive 2008”.

Winterkorn, 64, succeeded Bernd Pischetsrieder as Chairman of Volkswagen AG on 1 Jan. 2007. Prior to that, he had been the Chairman of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen Group subsidiary Audi AG.

Born in Leonberg, he studied metallurgy and metal physics at the University of Stuttgart. From 1973 to 1977 he was a Ph.D student at the Max-Planck-Institute for Metal Research and Metal Physics, where he received his doctorate in 1977.

In other news, Volkswagen AG will face a much tougher business environment next year as demand from countries at the center of the European debt crisis wanes, the carmaker’s CEO, Martin Winterkorn, said.

“There’s no question that 2012 will be considerably harder, mostly in Europe and there particularly in the highly indebted countries such as Italy and Spain,” Winterkorn told German business newspaper Handelsblatt in an interview on Monday.
