As Mazda and Fiat have signed the agreement, production of the new Alfa Romeo Roadster is expected to begin in 2015.
Mazda will be the one which will manufacture the open-top two-seater sports car at its plant in Hiroshima, Japan, beginning from 2015. According to the companies the new Alfa Romeo roadster will be produced for the global market and will be based on the next generation Mazda MX-5 architecture. According to the agreement, both Mazda and Fiat will develop two different brand-specific roadsters, which will feature rear-wheel drive.
This agreement will help Alfa revive the classic Spider roadster model, providing it with the latest technology and also put into effect Fiat’s plan to revamp the entire Alfa Romeo line by 2016. Mazda plans to bring back the enthusiasm for the open-top two-seater sports cars, which will benefit its own MX-5 roadster, which is already the best-selling roadster in the world.
All that it is known about the new Alfa Romeo roadster is that it will be based on the MX-5 platform but it will have a different design and engine, not to resemble its Mazda cousin. It is also expected to cost more than the Mazda MX-5, but let’s not jump to conclusions and wait for the automakers’ precise information.
