Mazda MX-5 GT – the fastest MX-5 image

Mazda UK unveiled today the lightest and most powerful version of the MX-5 sports car. Unfortunately, it’s also the company’s new entry for this year’s Britcar MSA British Endurance Championship – so it’s not a street legal car.

The car has been built by Tunbridge-Wells-based Jota Sport, which has concentrated on cutting weight and increasing power.

At 850kg, the Mazda MX-5 GT racecar will accelerate from 0 to 60mph in three seconds and hit a top speed of 160mph.  Power comes from a 2.0-litre Mazda engine tuned to produce 275bhp. The engine is mated to a six-speed a sequential paddle-shift gearbox.

In addition to carbon doors and Polycarbonate windows, the car also features FIA approved safety equipment – a roll cage, race seats and harness, external electric cut-off and fire extinguisher, safety catches on the bonnet and boot lids, competition steering wheel and race alloy wheels.

Small and hopeful as it is, the MX-5 GT is, at least on paper, as ready for the races ahead as any of its other competitors.
