The British based automaker McLaren is planning to offer its upcoming MP4-12C Spider with a folding hardtop.
The fact that McLaren is already working on the convertible version of the MP4-12C, which will be named the Spider, is no longer a surprise for anyone but what is mostly interesting about this is that the folding hardtop which will be used on the new supercar will be manufactured by Webasto, the same company which has produced the hardtop of the Ferrari 458 Spider. According to the guys at autocar.co.uk, the transparent engine hood will be kept on the roadster version and the conversion between coupe and spider will be made by trying to keep the same weight in order for the supercar to maintain its maneuverability.
Even with its roof down, rumors are saying that the McLaren MP4-12C Spider will be faster than the Coupe but the engine is expected to remain the same, which means that under its hood we will still find the 3.8 liter twin-turbo V8 unit. In the Coupe, the engine is developing a total output of 592 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 443 lb-ft of torque between 3,000 and 7,000 rpm. The model can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 3.3 seconds before reaching a top speed of 205 mph.
