The new generation of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class was officially presented to the public on 15th of May, 2013, in Hamburg, at the Airbus A380 delivery center.
The German based automaker has finished modifying the new generation of the S-Class and after months of testing and implementing new technologies, which will eventually make their way into cheaper vehicles over the years, the model is now ready to meet its future customers.
“Rather than being about safety or aesthetics, power or efficiency, comfort or dynamism, our aspirations were ‘the best or nothing’ in every respect. No other car stands for the Mercedes-Benz brand promise more than the S-Class.” said Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars.
The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class will come with a 3.0 liter V6 engine in the S350 BlueTEC, which is good for 258 HP (190 kW) and 620 Nm of torque (457 lb-ft), with a 4.7 liter V8 petrol with 455 HP (355 kW) and 700 Nm of torque (516 lb-ft) in the S500 and with a 3.5 liter V6 with 306 HP (225 kW) and 370 Nm of torque (273 lb-ft), in the S400 Hybrid. The model will also get an AMG version. The new S-Class generation will come in four body styles, for the first time in history, sedan, long wheelbase sedan, replacing the Maybach, the Cabrio and the Coupe, which will come instead of the CL-Class.

S 300 BlueTEC HYBRID: energy efficiency class A+: 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel engine developing 150 kW (204 hp) + 15 kW electric motor. Fuel consumption: 4.4 litres per 100 km (CO2: 115 g/km). Acceleration: 0 to 100 km/h in 7.6 seconds.
S 400 HYBRID: 3.5-litre six-cylinder petrol engine developing 225 kW (306 hp) + 20 kW electric motor. Fuel consumption: 6.3 litres per 100 kilometres. Acceleration: 0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds.
S 500: 4.7-litre eight-cylinder petrol engine developing 335 kW (455 hp). Fuel consumption: 8.6 litres per 100 kilometres. Acceleration: 0 to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds.
S 350 BlueTEC: 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel engine developing 190 kW (258 hp). Fuel consumption: 5.6 litres per 100 kilometres. Acceleration: 0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds.
All new S-Class models feature the 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission with DIRECT SELECT lever as standard.
The car’s dimensions change very little from its predecessor. However interior space is up marginally in all directions – there are 12 millimetres more maximum headroom for the driver, as well as 14 millimetres more shoulder room and 10 millimetres more elbow room in the front.The wheelbase remains unchanged at 124.6 inches. Overall length is the same, too, at 206.5 inches, but the S-class grows in several other dimensions. There are two body lengths to choose from: 5248 and 5116 millimetres – 42 and 40 millimetres longer than the predecessor model respectively.
The sixth-generation limousine brings us one step closer to automated driving. It has cameras that act as eyes and radar sensors that act as ears, for a 360-degree view of the road. It also commands the Brake Assist System, which can now sense cross traffic and pedestrians and react as necessary. But we haven’t even mentioned all the new stuff yet, like a camera that scans the road surface ahead for potholes and cracks. Road Surface Scan is the name of this technology and, according to the Germans, the new S Class is the fist car in the world to have suspension ‘with eyes’.
“As if you are on a flying carpet,” Mercedes sales chief Joachim Schmidt told reporters.
The firm boasts it is the ‘most advanced S-Class ever created’, with the driver even able to choose any perfume he or she wishes circulating around the cabin via an atomiser in the air conditioning system. More, the new vehicle now comes with electro-mechanical steering, and is the first car in the world to dispense completely with light-bulbs – replacing all lights with LED systems.
Almost 500 LEDs assume the task of illuminating the road, vehicle, interior and luggage compartment. Depending on equipment, these are:
Headlamps: each with up to 56 LEDs; Tail lights: each with up to 35 LEDs (plus 4 for the rear fog lamp); Interior (including ambient lighting): approx. 300 LEDs
New standard equipment includes collision-prevention assist; magic vision control; mbrace2; a Burmeister audio system; LED ambient lighting with seven colors, five dimming levels, and four dimming zones; and two 12.3-inch high-resolution screens on the dash head unit and instrument cluster.
Buyers will be able to chose between five seating layouts, with the most advanced one offering rear seats that recline to an angle of 43.5 degrees, offering calf support and an extra comfort cushion. As an additional individualization feature, the “First Class Rear” incorporates a Business center console combining personal comfort with practical convenience (integration of a telephone handset, additional stowage compartments, folding table, etc.).
Sales and price
In the U.S. and China, the new S Class will come only in long-wheelbase variant. The new S class goes on sale in Europe starting in July at an after-tax base price of 79,790 euros in Germany.
