Megabus crash: The double-decker was made last year, inspected days ago image

The double-decker that crashed yesterday into a bridge pillar along Interstate 55 was manufactured last year and passed a maintenance check days ago.

The impact was so powerful that it flung 16-year-old passenger Baysha Collins from the upper-level seat where she was resting to a stairway leading to the lower level.

Illinois State Police confirmed a woman seated above the driver on the second floor of the bus was killed. She has been identified as 25-year-old Aditi Avhad of India. She was on her way to Columbia, Missouri.

Trooper Doug Francis said 38 people were taken to hospitals for injuries from the crash, which left the bus sitting with its crumpled front end smashed up against the bridge support.
MegaBus spokeswoman Amanda Byers said the bus was at full capacity, carrying 81 passengers, when it crashed near Litchfield, about 55 miles northeast of St. Louis. It also was to stop in St. Louis and Columbia, Mo.
