Mercedes A-Class EV powered by Tesla electric engine? image

According to some media reports, Tesla is working on an all-electric powertrain for an unnamed EV for Daimler.

A report on Groen7 website says that “a source at Tesla” has revealed that the previously unnamed EV Tesla is busy with is an updated, electric version of the new A-Class, one that will perhaps arrive in 2013.
Before you get excited however, it is expected that the 2013 Mercedes-Benz A Class Electric will be treated as a prototype car by Daimler, much like the BMW active E and Audi A3 e-tron are to rival automaker BMW and Audi. Therefore – not a car that you can actually buy.

Since Mercedes and Tesla have not made any official statements about the A-Class, the specifics of its powertrain are unknown.

The two companies announced their first partnership at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show. Tesla agreed to supply batteries for 1,000 electric versions of the Smart ForTwo, to be tested in Germany and Italy.

Aside from Tesla’s partnership with Daimler, the all-electric automaker is also set to produce electric RAV4 SUVs for Toyota. Production on the SUV begins this year in Ontario, not Tesla’s California-based plant.
